The 2024 KASEAS Annual International Conference will take place at Pukyong National University on August 29(Thursday) and 30(Friday). In addition, the 2024 Korea-Japan Conference of Southeast Asian Studies will follow on August 31(Saturday). This year’s conference will be the largest in the history of the KASEAS, adopting an omnibus format.
The central theme of this year’s conference is to explore the connections and inclusivity demonstrated by Southeast Asia within a world order characterized by conflict and division. Today, the global landscape faces threats of war, violence, and extremism. Through the lens of Southeast Asian experiences, we aim to uncover resilience and wisdom in addressing these challenges.
The conference will feature various panels that include foreign scholars and the next generation of researchers. To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the ASEAN-Korea dialogue partnership, we have arranged panels to celebrate the strengthening of our relations and to discuss future directions. Additionally, there will be six country-specific panels focused on Indonesia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. The winners of the 2024 ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest, jointly organized by our association, will also be announced during the conference.
We are especially excited about the significant participation of Indonesian and Japanese scholars. Twelve Indonesian academics will attend, led by the Rector of the Islamic State University of K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid, along with the Director of the School of Environmental Science at the University of Indonesia. Nine Japanese scholars, including the President of the Japanese Society for Southeast Asian Studies and the Director of the Kyoto University Center for Southeast Asian Studies, will also be present.
Over three days, this conference will be co-hosted by 15 institutions. Since 2016, our association has worked to consolidate its organizational capacity by holding the conference once a year, inviting leading Southeast Asian research institutions to create a "National Conference of Southeast Asian Scholars." We are delighted to see that all domestic Southeast Asian research institutes will participate, which fulfills our original aim.
A general meeting will also be held for the election of the association's next president. This will be the first meeting where associate members can exercise their voting rights. We encourage all members to attend, support, and engage in discussions to contribute to our collective advancement as an organization.
