On October 24, 2024, the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul (KBRI Seoul) held the inaugural "Friends of Indonesia Symposium 2024" and presented awards of appreciation to three members of the Korean Association of Southeast Asian Studies (KASEAS), including its president, Professor Jeon Je Seong. Zelda Wulan Kartika, Charge d'áffaires Ad Interim, expressed gratitude in the award inscription, noting “efforts to strengthen friendship and mutual understanding between Koreans and Indonesians through academic collaboration, advisory roles, and policy suggestions.”
The KASEAS members honored with these awards were President Jeon Je Seong, Professor Emeritus Yang Seung-Yoon from the Department of Malay-Indonesian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and Director Kim Ye-Gyeom of the Indonesia Centre at Busan University of Foreign Studies.
President Jeon, emphasizing the motto “No understanding, no friendship,” proposed that KASEAS’s Indonesian and East Timor Research Committee co-host symposiums to support the next generation of Indonesian scholars(. The Indonesian Embassy recognized the important role that Korean Indonesianists play in fostering deeper understanding and people-to-people exchanges between Korea and Indonesia, expressing its commitment to further support Indonesian studies in Korea.
